about

Dull World is a new project by Branden Diven (AAD label, Genophobia, Piercing) focused on creating dynamic Harsh Noise Walls with many shifting dynamics, willfully disregarding and transcending the established rules of what has generally come to be expected from the contemporary HNW release.

Although "Within the Boundaries of the Mundane" is a single track, it is actually a carefully curated collection of twenty-six short two minute walls arranged together to form one long piece, with multiple barely noticeable changes throughout, shifts that are so subtle you can still attain a trance state, but enough nuance to keep you thoroughly engaged on the track without it just becoming background noise.

Here's an explanation from the artist in more detail:

"I love HNW and am always searching for the best stuff, there are many great artists out there and it is definitely still a thriving subgenre of harsh noise, but I've begun to find myself sometimes disappointed with the laziness of a track staying the exact same the entire time. It often works just fine and sometimes sounds so good you never want it to end, but at times it can be more exhausting then rewarding if not done right, and I find it especially irritating when two sides of a tape are identical. For me, a great HNW release offers more variety, if not in a single track then with multiple tracks. This is one of the main reasons I felt the need to do this project, to show an example of my ideal kind of HNW. My desire for variety has been taken to the extreme here, as each "micro wall" has the potential to go on much longer then it does, but instead they are each given only a brief time before switching, leaving the listener wanting more instead of growing bored with it. Having nearly thirty short walls all on one track is one of the most daring and ambitious things I've seen done in the HNW movement. Each one processed from a totally different source sound and recorded in real time on analog gear with no looping or post-production. Each one treated as significant as if it were going to be an hour long. Even though HNW is one of the easier forms of noise to create, that doesn't mean it can't be good content that warrants repeated listens for years to come, just look at the stuff Richard Ramirez and Sam McKinlay have done...I feel that Perpetual Abjection is another strong example that is really nurturing my favorite aspects of the genre, a really well curated label releasing what could potentially become future classics with longevity and significance, and that's why I really wanted to be a part of the label."
