"All Thin Mountain titles are taken directly from the Jon Padgett story “Escape to Thin Mountain.” “The paper mill days” in the Mythos of the stories in Padgett’s Dunnstown (the location of all of the stories in “The Secret of Ventriloquism,” including “Escape…”) is an annual period during the fall when the atmospheric conditions around the town trap factory smoke and the ever-present remnants of toxic fumes related to a mysterious early-20th Century environmental disaster as if “under a bowl” in the town. The resulting Grey-brown choking smog envelops the town until “the paper mill days” break with the coming of winter weather."
